Prerequisites
Basics of propagation, antennas, digital signal processing and transmission techniques are welcome
Learning outcomes
Goal of the course is not only that to describe the systems and their procedure, but mainly to bring the students to understand how the wireless envirinment affects transmission and how the systems have coped with these constraints to overcome them.
Course contents
Channel characterization
Propagation, attenuation, multipath, fading, intersymbol interference, doppler effect, flat and dispersive media

Review of transmission and multiplexing
Capacity, error control codes and modulation performance

Diversity techniques
Antenna diversity, time diversity (interleaving, Hybrid ARQ), ferquency diversity (frequency hopping).
Basics of multiantenna systems and multiuser detection. OFDM systems and scheduling.

Cellular systems
GSM, GSM phase 2, 3G, 3G evolution / 4G. Trends to 5G.

Local systems
802.11 standards family (phy, mac, performance modelling)
802.15 and sensor networks: standards, multihop, routing, energy efficiency.
Teaching methods
Class lessons
Reccomended or required readings
Slides of the course, selected papers.
Assessment methods
Oral exam. The students will be given the iopportunity to self study a topic not treated in depth during the course and give a presentatio as a part of the exam.
