Prerequisites
Structural and continuum mechanics are the main prerequisites of the course (that are typically taught in a Structure Mechanics course). For convenience of the students, main concepts are recalled in the first lectures.
Learning outcomes
Students are expected to learn the most used methods for the analysis and design of reinforced concrete frames. An intermediate goal toward the main objective is to get the student acquainted with the constitutive behavior of materials. Developing the ability to understand and critically use current European and Italian building regulations is a a further goal of the course.
Course contents
a) The displacement approach as the main method for solving plane frames. Internal actions on beams and columns.
b) strength of materials and structural loads in the presence of uncertainty: probabilistic and semi-probabilistic methods
c) constitutive behavior of concrete and steel: creep, shrinkage, stress block, elastic moduli, yielding and ultimate strength, ductility
d) a first insight into analysis and design of steel structures and connections
Teaching methods
Lectures on theoretical and practical issues. Problems soved independently by students under the suupervision of the teacher (when needed)
Reccomended or required readings
B. Mosley, J. Bungey, R. Hulse. Reinforced concrete design to Eurocode 2 – Sixth Edition. Palgrave Macmillan editions.
Assessment methods
Written exam (compulsory). Oral exam (optional in case of positive written exam)
