Learning outcomes
The course deals with the peculiar molecular biology features of plants also describing the experimental approaches used to unravel them. The Course will provide the biochemical and physiological notions necessary to understand both plant metabolism and its regulation, and transduction pathways allowing cells to deal with both endogenous signals and environmental cues. Particular attention will be devoted to highlight the biotechnology applications of plant cells and organisms.
Course contents
Nuclear, plastid and mitochondrial genomes. Protein import into organelles and nucleus: the export process. Chloroplast biogenesis. Photosynthesis: molecular aspects of CO2 assimilation. Primary products of photosynthesis and their biotechnological use. Nitrogen metabolism. Photoreceptors, plant hormones and their relevant signal transduction pathways. Plant cell transformation methods (Agrobacterium-mediated, biolistic). Plant molecular biotechnology and genetic improvement. Natural organic substances and relevant biotechnologies.
