Prerequisites
Being the first course speficaramente dedicated to the history of cinema, there are no special prerequisites. However, given the highly interdisciplinary nature of matter (expressive codes range from literature to the Visual Arts) you should have basic skills related to history of literature and art, as well as have a good knowledge of the history of the twentieth century.
Learning outcomes
The course provides knowledge and tools in order to understand theretical, textual and historical analysis of cinema from origin to 1945. It will examine strategies of representation and the question of identity in film genre and in cinema magazines.
Course contents
The course aims to study the film industry as an instrument of communication and representation of reality in its connections with specific socio-cultural contexts. In particular, we will examine the initial stages of film history (the pre-cinema, the cinema of attractions, the institutional model, the historical avant-garde and classic cinema), investigated in the Italian, European and American.
The course includes a workshop of analysis around a Orson Welles' film.
The course includes an integrative seminar aimed at deepening the structures of film language (Dr. Lorenzo Donghi)
Teaching methods
The course is based on the following taching methods:
1- Traditional lectures
2. Slides, especially concerning visual and iconographic sourcesdirctor
3. View and comment of videos/film/installations
4. Presence of external guests (directors, artists, producers, etc)
5. Planning of film viewing
6. Sharing of all teaching materials on Platform Kiro.
