The aim of the course is individuating Cisalpine Gaul as a territory of experimentation in applying a common control system and a homogeneous organization of roads, regular agrarian division, colonies and municipia, in order to the diffusion of a complex program of acculturation.
Course contents
A general introduction to the story of romanization and a brief chapter on the scholarship about Cisalpine Gaul will open the course. The central part will deal with problems of roads construction, agricultural organization, urban planning. Finally, the artistic acculturation of Northern Italy will be examinated above all from the point of view of honorary and funerary sculpture (with particular attention to the Imperial group of the Basilica of Velleia and other dynastic groups of Cisalpine Gaul).
