Prerequisites
Basic principle and notions of syntactic and semantic analysis.
Learning outcomes
In this course we learn how to conduct semantic analysis focusing on the interplay between lexical/semantic representations and syntactic forms. The course privileges a corpus-based approach to linguistic investigation.
Course contents
Syntactic theories
The course aims to provide students with an overview of major contemporary syntactic theories and to give them insight into the development of syntactic thought. Both functional and formal approaches to syntax are discussed, focusing on the analysis of specific phenomena such as the passive and argument realization. At the end of the course the students are asked to conduct a syntactic analysis using empirical data from linguistic resources (annotated corpora, repositories, WALS etc.).
