Learning outcomes
The class is designed to provide students with the epistemological premises and the deontological framework of pedagogical research; it also aims at illustrating the peculiar problems, methods and instruments of empirical pedagogical research, with specific reference to the experimental approach.
Course contents
Title: Experimental investigation and research theory in the field of education.

The class in experimental pedagogy, which is structured as a general survey, will present the epistemological assumptions of pedagogical research and the main typologies of investigation implemented to study pedagogical phenomena. Through the reading of key passages of Dewey’s How we think and Logic we will define precisely the premises of a research method that, starting from experience and passing through the problem’s assessment, the formulation of hypothesis and their experimental verification, comes to an elucidation of the initial situation and to the elaboration of new knowledge. Against this conceptual background we will then present the methods and the designs applied to research in experimental pedagogy. The last part of the course will specifically deal with observation procedures in educational research.
Teaching methods
Lectures. All the professor’s lessons aim at favouring students’ active participation and interactive dialogue in group work. The participation of other professors/researchers/experts with and interest in the course topic is possible.
