Learning outcomes
Knowledge of the basic aspects of Roman organization of the landscape in northern Italy
Course contents
The Romanization of northern Italy: outline of history; the invasion of Italy by the Cimbri and the defeat at Vercellae;

the beginnings of historical studies on northern Italy in Rome: Cato and Polybius; northern Italy in Strabo's Geography and Pliny the Elder's Natural History;

introduction to Greek and Roman cartography; the Tabula Peutingeriana;

the roads of northern Italy in Roman times: an overview; the Roman itineraries; the testimony of epigraphy; the inland waterway system of northern Italy; lakes and rivers of northern Italy in the ancient literary sources;

the "geometrical landscape": land divisions in pre-Roman age; Roman land divisions in northern Italy; their orientation and correspondence to the specific geographical feature of the territories;

Some examples of Roman organization of landscape relating to this area: Tortona, Pavia, Bergamo and Como.
