An outline of International relations history in the Early and Late Modern Age
is useful to understand the main issues analysed in the course.

Obiettivi formativi
This course aims to help students understand the machinery of diplomacy and its role and challenges in contemporary international society, enabling them to recognize , analyse and compare its tools, historical continuities, changes and innovations. In particular, on successful completion of the course, students will be able to: (i) recognize the main categories and tools developed in the theory and practice of modern diplomacy; (ii) identify the proper tools and formats according to bilateral and multilateral negotiation needs and single cases needs; (iii) recognize and analyze main continuities, changes and innovations in the diplomatic experience and profession from early Modern Age to current days.

The course focuses the process of institutionalization of diplomacy (15th-20th Century) and recent cases and formats of conventional and unconventional bilateral diplomacy, multilateral diplomacy, as well as mediation and negotiation cases taken also form current international politics highlights

Lectures and in class discussion on recommended readings and on issues raised by the teacher.
Two open "laboratory" lectures on a given topic with cases selected and presented by students

Modalità verifica apprendimento
(i) in class participation and contribution to in class discussion in order to improve critical analysis and application of theoretical concepts, categories and formats to practical cases (including participation in the open lectures with individual presentation of selected cases on the assigned topic and interaction with the Guest Lecturers): the participation accounts for 20% of the final vote; (ii) final essay on a subject agreed upon with the teacher. The essay accounts for 40% of the final vote. The essay should prove the capability of selecting relevant and authoritative bibliography on the selected topic; it should present clearly the research question and prove the capability to apply analytical tools to empirical cases, also with reference to the topics presented by the teacher in her lectures; (iii) oral exam: each student will be required to study the contents of the course (including the required readings selected for each unit, and the Guest Lecturers' cases). The oral exam counts for 40% of the final vote and it includes discussion on the final essay. Precision of the concepts and appropriateness of the lexicon will be the main criteria of evaluation of the student's performance.
