Lesson hours
56 lesson hours
Activity type
WRITTEN AND ORAL TEST
Prerequisites
The mathematical tools of the math courses of the first year are employed. No other mathmatical prerequisites are requested.
The notions of the course of Data Analysis 1 are assumed as known by the student.. However, many of these notions are reconsidere in greater detail in the course.
Learning outcomes
The course has the fundamental objective of enabling the student to understand the fundamental methods of data analysis provided by the classical statistics.
The student will be able to analyze a problem and identify the most suitable analysis methods for that specific case, and to apply them correctly.
The student will also be able to evaluate the degree of success achieved and decide if it is appropriate to use different and more advanced methods, which are not covered in the course but are only mentioned or described briefly.
The hours of laboratories will further refine the ability to correctly conduct experiments in the field of analog electronics and interpret the results, also correctly finding measurement errors.
Course contents
Calculus of probabilities, axioms, theorems, conditional probabilities and Bayes' theorem. Fundamental probability distributions and their characteristics: mean, variance, moments, fields of application. Probability calculus in many dimensions. Covariance and Correlation, Functions of random variables and convolution theorem. Basic statistics: Neyman's method, confidence intervals for probability, mean and variance, and fundamental statistic tests as the t-tests and chi-squared tests.
Application of the previous concepts to all kinds of possible measurements in Physics.
Application of previous methods to the laboratory exercises.
Teaching methods
lectures for the Statistics part, practical exercises for the laboratory part
