Course contents
The course explores the Indian Ocean as a venue of historical contacts and cultural exchanges.
The course is divided into three parts: the first one provides an overview of the rich historiography that has flourished around the Indian Ocean. Students will also be introduced to the principal phases of the history of the region, with particular attention to the role of Islam and European colonial expansion.
The second part will focus on mobility, trans-national networking and anti-colonial activism in the Indian Ocean region. Two particular types of networks will be scrutinized: labor networks and anti-colonial networks. Both cases will be analyzed through a global and trans-imperial approach.
The third part will consider the period 1960s to today through a series of localized case studies.Frontal learning, class discussions and presentations.
