Prerequisites
Basic education in mathemathics and physics.
Learning outcomes
The student is supposed to acquire the basic chemical knowledge that is necessary to understand several geological topics, ranging from mineralogy to geochemistry.
Course contents
The basic chemical principles and their use in the understanding of the most common compounds and materials. This includes:
(i) electronic structure of the atoms and periodic table of the elements;
(ii) the chemical bond (ionic, covalent, metallic, van der Waals);
(iii) the states of matter (solid, liquid, gas and solutions);
(iv) the cemical equilibrium (acid-base and redox reactions and thermodynamics);
(v) stechiometry
(vi) introduction to inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, coordination chemistry, nuclear chemistry).
Teaching methods
lectures and guided exercises.
