Learning outcomes
The course provides the framework for understanding international organizations and their modus operandi, focusing on the UN and OSCE. It is designed to offer, in addition to the theoretical background, also the point of view of the field work, with the analysis of numerous case studies and simulations.
Course contents
1) International Organizations and Theoretical Analysis 2) The United Nations. Principal Bodies, Specialized Agencies, Funds and Programs, Staff and Financing System.3) The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. Origins, structure, goals, staff and funding system. 4) Interventions: Peace and Security. Peacekeeping evolution. Case studies: UN intervention in Bosnia- Herzegovina and Rwanda 5) International Election Missions. Case studies: the first democratic elections post-apartheid in South Africa - 1994; Organizing elections after a multi-ethnic conflict: Bosnia Herzegovina, 1996. 6) Post-war Reconstruction. Case Study on return and integration of refugees and minorities: Croatia; International Tribunals for War Crimes: ICTY and ICTR 8) Institution Building, Democratization, Rule of Law, Minorities' Protection. Case Study: United Nations Mission in Kosovo
Teaching methods
The course is based both on lectures and students’ involvement in group work, analysis and debate on the main topics of the course.
Reccomended or required readings
Teaching material, consisting of slides, dispensations and relevant bibliographic references, will be provided to students at the end of each lesson.

Assessment methods
Written examination based on short essays. It aims to test the level of knowledge of the subject but also the ability to make thematic links and analysis.
