Prerequisites
The course is divided into basic and advanced course: the students will be assigned to the basic course if not adequately trained (for the criteria for assignment see: Avviso alle matricole). Students in this situation will be informed of the activities to be followed to recover the initial deficit. All other students will instead take the advanced course. You can not switch from one course to another without the permission of the teacher.
Learning outcomes
The course (1) provides a solid knowledge of Latin morphosyntax and the competence of a basic lexicon, (2) makes students able to produce a correct formal analysis of a Latin text, (3) provides a basic information about the main authors of Latin literary prose.
Course contents
A) individual study: two texts in Latin: one of Caesar (a book from De bello Gallico or Anthology, edition Signorelli) and one of Cicero (Prima catilinaria or Pro Archia: Signorelli editions are recommended).
B) frontal lessons: translation and commentary of texts typical of the main genres of Latin prose; the teacher will give this texts during the lessons and will provided basic information about the following Latin authors: Cato, Cornelius Nepos, Caesar, Sallustius, Cicero, Livius, Seneca, Petronius, Quintilian, Pliny the Elder, Pliny the Younger, Tacitus, Suetonius, Apuleius.
Teaching methods
The lessons will be frontal and intended both to illustrate in detail the linguistic peculiarities of the texts examinated and to present the Latin authors writers from an historical, literary and stylistic point of view.

Assessment methods
Exam is oral: there will be translation and linguistic analysis of the texts of Cesare and Cicero subject to individual study; if successful, on the same day there will be a second part, both linguistic and literary, on the texts presented during the frontal lessons and life and works of the most important Latin authors.
Students not attending may agree with the teacher an alternative program.

A student from the basic course that in view of the authorization to teaching Latin intends to support more than two mandatory exams in Latin (and thus exceed the 12 credits in the field L-FIL-LET/04 Latin language and literature) will:
1 - take a written test of translation from the Latin, the written test can be argued from the first year of the course and does not expire.
2 - make contact with the professor in charge of the third (and possibly fourth) Latin exam to arrange an additional program.
