Course contents
Human rights, violence and contemporary wars
The course aims to deepen the historical human rights issues, officially defined seventy years ago by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, approved on December 10, 1948, by the United Nations General Assembly. In this perspective, after an historical excursus on previous landmarks in conceptual elaboration of human rights and connected humanitarian experiences, the course will analyzes war crimes and international justice, comparing repressive practices, violence against civilians and terrorist intimidation, genocide projects and practices into the European context of the twentieth century, particularly looking at the two World Wars, at Fascist and Nazi military occupations, but also at crimes of Italian colonial rule in Africa. Finally, the experiences of denunciation, punishment and removal of individual and collective responsibilities will be focused in the post-war context. In this regard, besides different points of views of Italian and international historiography, primary and secondary sources of various typologies will be analyzed too.
