Learning outcomes
Obiettivi
The course aims to introduce students to the knowledge and use of technical / conceptual tools of historiography. We will both a) explore some fundamental components of historical thinking such as methods of historical analysis, ideas about context, truth and objectivity, legitimacy, differences between scholarly and fiction narratives, etc. through reading and discussion of M.Bloch, The Historian's Craft and b) get to consider the potential of iconographic sources for early modern history and the methodological problems associated with their use.

At the end the student will have elements to reflect independently on the characteristics of the historical profession and to appreciate the use of iconographic documentation for historical research
Course contents
Using both written and iconographic material we will examine a case study: Imagery of the Turk in Early modern Europe
Students will find the scheduled lectures, suggestions, required readings and optional assignment on Kiro (http://elearning4.unipv.it/umanistici/) . They must register on Kiro before the beginning of the lessons
Teaching methods
During the lectures we will 1. Analyze, evaluate, describe the documents; 2. Compare the different views and stereotypes they convey 3. Identify an historical thesis embedded in books or essays 4. Build a collective text with search results; 5. Create a wiki page where to publish the class study results
A practical seminar will be held on argumentation: how to analyze arguments, how to construct an agument, how to discuss and expose personal conclusions on a topic
Teaching is based on seminars and requires personal work and regular attendance: class work involves lectures, teamwork, discussion of the texts in the bibliography and of other materials provided by the teacher.
Students will be allowed two miss up two absences during the course

3) An essay or book marked with an asterisk chosen by the student in the file BIBLIOGRAFIA 2016-2017 published on Kiro

Assessment methods
Oral exam (50%). A portion of the mark depends on the active participation in class work and will include the preparation of written texts (25%) and their collective discussion (25%).
