Prerequisites
It's necessary to have a very basic acquaintance with the history of Western arts (including music) as well as with Western history in general.
Learning outcomes
The goal is providing students with the competence for analyzing sociologically the prestige (or social honor) ascribed to certain forms of consumption ("cultural" consumption) in Western (or Westernized) democratic societies based on market economic systems.
Course contents
The instructor will discuss the structure and the main features of the cultural prestige ascribed to certain forms of consumption, as distinguished from fashion and luxury. The utilization of qualitative and quantitative techniques of sociological investigation in this field is also be a part of this course.
