Learning outcomes
Acquisistion of the basic techniques for the analysis and design of electrical distribution and utilization systems with particular reference to the following topics: sizing of lines (overhead and cable), protection of lines against overload and short-circuit.
Course contents
1. Medium and Low Voltage Distribution Systems
Network structure. Calculation of electric lines; approximate formulas of the voltage drop on short lines, design and analysis calculation by the principle of the maximum admissible voltage drop.

2. Thermal Phenomena in Electrical Lines
Equations of heat transmission. Current rating of lines with bare conductors. Current rating of lines with insulated conductors (cables). Line sizing by the thermal criterion. Classification and structure of electrical cables. Current rating of low-voltage cables; air or underground installation according to the CEI-UNEL tables. Operation of lines (overhead and cables) in overload and short circuit conditions.

3. Switchgears
Classification and definitions. Notes on the mechanism of the interruption of electrical currents. Characteristics of circuit breakers, disconnectors and contactors. Circuit breakers. Circuit breakers with residual current device.

4. Low Voltage Lines Protection
