Prerequisites
A2/B1 level in English (according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, CEFR) is required for students to enroll in the course.
Students holding a PET Cambridge certificate (awarded after 2010) only need to take the final exam (no preliminary exam).
Students holding an FCE Cambridge certificate (awarded after 2010) do not need to take the exam (no preliminary exam, no final exam).
Learning outcomes
The course Lingua inglese -a sets out to improve language proficiency in English (according to a B1/B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) with the aim of developing critical reading skills applied to a variety of texts in the humanities in English.
Course contents
The course focuses on the structure and features of English in the Humanities. Throughout the course, we will analyse philosophy and history texts, concentrating in particular on several linguistic and grammar and topics.
Lectures by the regular professor are accompanied by language practice activities with the language assistant. Based on reading and listening activities, the language practice activities aim at improving students’ ability to read and comprehend English texts and expanding their knowledge of vocabulary and grammar. Depending on students’ needs, topics in basic English grammar may be addressed. All lessons are in English.
The programme is the same for attenders and non attenders.

Assessment methods
Attending students
Students are required to take a final written exam consisting of two parts:
1. Preliminary language test (dr. Angelica Attivissimo, Language practice activities section).
The following programme applies to students having attended at least 30 hours of the language practice classes.
English language tasks based on 6 units from New Language Leader Intermediate and the grammar topics in English Grammar in Use addressed during the lessons. Task types will be similar to those found in the textbooks.
2. Final exam (dr. Caterina Viola, lectures section).
The following programme applies to students having attended at least 13 out of 18 lectures.
Comprehension of a history or philosophy text; two grammar tasks (fill-the-gap and transformation tasks); one word-formation task; one cloze test.
-Only after passing the preliminary language test will students be able to access the final exam. It will be possible to take the preliminary test in January (week from 7th January to 15th January 2015), June (week from 5th to 13th June 2015) and August/September (week from 27th August to 5th September 2015). Once passed, the test is valid for one year.
Students of the current academic year having attended at least 30 hours of the language practice classes will have the opportunity to take the preliminary language test in December.
- Scores in the preliminary test are expressed as percentages. A 65% score is necessary to pass the test. Scores in the preliminary test contribute to one third of the final mark. The final mark is assigned by the professor based on scores in the preliminary test (language assistant) and in the final exam (regular professor).
- Dictionaries are not allowed during the exams (preliminary and final exam).
- Students have to register to exams online at http://kiro.unipv.it
- Non-registered students will not be allowed to take the exam.
Non-attending students

Non-attending students and students attending less than 30 hours of the language practice lessons will be required to fill in an additional exam section.
