Prerequisites
-Basic knowledge of Greek dialectology
-Knowledge of Greek literature from the Archaic period to the first century AD C.
-Knowledge of main recitative metres (dactylic exameter, elegiac, iambic trimeter, trochaic tetrameter)
Learning outcomes
-MODULE A) to develop the skills of reading and analysis of lyric texts, recognizing the rhythmic structures and their semantic value.
-MODULE B) to develop the ability to identify the distinctive features of the language and the style of Herodotus and Plato
EXPECTED RESULTS:
-to give an extensive knowledge in the field of lyric metres of greek drama; to give the students ability in reading the lyric of tragedy and understanding the interaction between metric code and semantic code.
-to provide students with the tools for textual, lexical, syntactic and stylistic analysis of two Greek prose authors: Herodotus as heir of the Ionian culture and the origin of Attica historiography; Plato as a witness of the spoken Attic dialect and inventor of the philosophical vocabulary.
Course contents
The course consists of two modules:
-MODULE A: The lyric of Greek tragedy. Structures, meters and rhythms

-MODULE B: Literary Languages, Herodotus and Plato:
-Reading with linguistic and rhetorical analysis of steps chosen from the books I, V and VIII of the Histories of Herodotus
-Reading with linguistic and rhetorical analysis of passages chosen by the Apology of Socrates and by the book V of the Republic of Plato.
