Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the lexicon, of the morphological forms and syntactic structures of Latin language.
Learning outcomes
The teaching aims to provide students with the basic knowledge in original language of some texts, which are particularly important in Latin literary tradition. Particular attention will be paid to their position inside the generic system of Latin literature and to their contribution to the development of literary culture in Rome. Due importance will be accorded to general problems of Latin culture and to its reception in modern literatures. It will be constantly referred to methods and tools of contemporary literary research.
Course contents
The subject of the course are Latin texts in original language, which will be read, translated and interpreted during the lessons. It will be read a significant selection of texts of love poetry of the Republican (particularly Catullus) and of the Augustan Age (Propertius, Tibullus, Ovidius).
Students should also know the outlines of the history of Latin literature. They could use a good handbook for Italian secondary school (it is recommended G.B. CONTE - E. PIANEZZOLA, Storia e Testi della letteratura latina, Firenze, Le Monnier, 2008), from the origins to the death of Septimius Severus.
In addition it is required to read and translate SALLUSTIUS, De Catilinae coniuratione or VERGILIUS, Aeneid, book IV.
Students are also required to know:
P. PINOTTI, L’elegia latina: storia di una forma poetica, Roma, Carocci, 2002.
Teaching methods
During the lessons the teacher will expose the development of Latin love poetry in Rome, from the neoterics and Catullus to the elegiac authors. Texts will be read and analysed in detail. Due attention will be given to their historical contextualisation referring, to their historical 'ideology' and to the evolution of the literary genre.
Reccomended or required readings
The texts which will be read during the lectures are to be found on platform Kiro.
Assessment methods
oral examination. Students should acquire the ability to master the subjects analysed during the lectures. They should understand them and expose them originally. Then they will be examined on the part that they have to prepare autonomously. They will be asked about the most important authors and literary trends. They should be able to situate them in the development of Latin literature with the aid of the handbook. The student will be asked to read his chosen text (matrically, if it is poetry) and then to answer to questions about basic morphology and syntax of Latin language.
Further information
Students who are not able to attend the lectures should contact the teacher to receive a substitute program.
