Course contents
Title of the course:
Historical grammar and history of grammar.

Program:

For attending students

- Deep knowledge of the problems discussed during the lectures.
- Study of the Chapters 2 and 3 (Greece and Rome) of R.H. Robins, Storia della linguistica (trad.it.), Bologna 1977
- Reading, translation and commentary of Dionysius Thrax, Techne Grammatike, and of some "grammatical chapters" of Quintilian (inst. 1,4,1 - 1,5,72) as well as of other short texts discussed during the lectures, distributed in photocopies and then made available on Kiro.

For not attending students:

provided that, for the specificity of the topics covered, frequency is highly recommended, not attending students should replace the step 1 of the previous program with personal study of the following manuals:
- A. Aloni (ed.), La lingua dei Greci. Corso propedeutico, Nuova edizione, Urbino 2011, pp. 53-95 and 145-193, in addition to the insights available online at http://www.carocci.it.
- C . Tagliavini, Fonetica e morfologia storica del latino, Bologna 1962, pp. 121-156 and 187-215.
They will, however, be required to take contact with the lecturer in order to agree on a plan of alternative readings.
Teaching methods
Lectures with collegial discussion of some issues.
Reccomended or required readings
We suggest as useful reference books, respectively for Greek and Latin:
- P. Chantraine, Morphologie historique du grec, Paris 1964.
- C . Tagliavini, Fonetica e morfologia storica del latino, Bologna 1962.

- R.H. Robins, Storia della linguistica (trad.it.), Bologna 1977.

Further bibliography of reference to the texts we read will be recommended during the course.
Assessment methods
Oral exam that will ask questions about the grammar topics discussed during the lectures, which, at the end of the course, will be gathered in a detailed list distributed to students and then available on the Kiro platform, and also traslation, comprehension and linguistic commentary on the texts dealt in the classroom or entrusted to individual study.
