Prerequisites
Some knowledge of ancient and medieval philosophy is not an absolute requirement, but it would be useful.
Learning outcomes
The content of this course is supplementary to what can already have been studied in other courses about ancient and medieval thought. Particular attention is devoted to scientific aspects.
Course contents
The main topics of the course will be various aspects of ancient medicine (with special attention to Hippocrates’ and Galen’s texts) and of medieval medicine (in particular, the scholastic medicine of the 12th c.–15th c. period). Careful consideration will be given to theoretical and doctrinal perspectives, as well as to learning and healing institutions where those perspectives were propagated or put into practice.
Teaching methods
Classroom lectures, mainly. Moreover, depending on the number of students, it should be possible to organize assignments for students and general discussions about subjects of special interest. In any case, texts will be used only in translation.
Reccomended or required readings
The students who would be interested in the course but for some kind of difficulty in attending the lectures, are urged to get in touch with professor Crisciani at the very beginning of the course (early March), in order to look for possible solutions.
Assessment methods
An oral examination. Written assignments would be taken into account.
Further information
The students who would be interested in the course but for some kind of difficulty in attending the lectures, are urged to get in touch with professor Crisciani at the very beginning of the course (early March), in order to look for possible solutions.
