Learning outcomes
The course aims at an advanced philological investigation of medieval Germanic texts, paying particular attention to Old English and Old High German traditions. The student will be able to master the methodological instruments that allow for a critical analysis of a text.
Course contents
The course aims at the acquisition of a knowledge in the fields of textual criticism and codicology, as far as medieval Germanic manuscript tradition is concerned. The second part of the course ("Germanic peoples and war") will then focus -following a philological approach- on the subject of war and aristocratic warrior culture in the light of medieval literary texts in the Germanic languages. Passages from medieval works in Old English ("Beowulf", "Battle of Finnsburh", "Battle of Brunanburh", "Battle of Maldon"), Old High German ("Lay of Hildebrand", "Lay of Ludwig") and Old Norse (Poetic Edda, "Raven Song") will be read, translated and commented from a linguistic, stylistic, cultural and historical point of view.
Teaching methods
Lectures in which issues of textual criticism will be outlined and texts will be read, translated and analyzed using a philological approach.
