Learning outcomes
The course is aiming at developing the learning of English Language and at improving the reading comprehension of philosophical texts and history manuals. It will improve the use of structures and lexicon of advanced learners in Humanities Department
Course contents
The course is subdivided into three sections : grammar revision ( B1/B2 level of the CEFR) , communication ( with emphasis on sentence construction , deduction and specialised lexis )and cultural development ( literary , philosophical , sociological , historical texts will be analysed and commented ). Part of the lessons would be devoted to written skills , especially reviews and short essays.
Teaching methods
Lectures , written practice, reading comprehension of literary , philosophical and historical texts. We would listen to and comment upon documentaries and movies to improve also the spoken comprehension. The course will be available also on the kiro Platform online.
Reccomended or required readings
Monolingual dictionary Oxford Advanced Learners ( advised).

A grammar text at choice for reference : Grammar in progress ed . My English Lab Pearson Longman or whatever other complete grammar used .

The texts and the exercises will be collected and available within March 2018.
Assessment methods
Attending students

Students are required to take a final written exam consisting of two parts:
1. Preliminary language test (dr. Deborah Harrison, Language practice activities section).
The following programme applies to students having attended at least 70% of the language practice classes.

English language tasks based on Life (National Geographic Learning) B1+ Coursebook. Task types will be similar to those found in the textbooks.

2. Final exam (dr. Natascia Gec, lectures section).
Reading comprehension of a historical/philosophical text, a cloze, transformations and a review.

-Only after passing the preliminary language test will students be able to access the final exam. It will be possible to take the preliminary test at the Language University Centre. Once passed, the test is valid for one year.

Non-attending students

Students are required to take a final written exam consisting of two parts:
1. Preliminary language test (dr. Deborah Harrison, Language practice activities section).

The following programme applies to students having attended at least 70% of language practice activities:

English language tasks based on Life (National Geographic Learning) B1+ Coursebook. Task types will be similar to those found in the textbooks. Non-attending students and students attending less than 30 hours of the language practice lessons will be required to fill in an additional exam section.

2. Final exam (dr. Natascia Gec, lectures section).
Reading comprehension of a historical/philosophical text , a cloze ; transformations and a short essay about one of the topics you will find in a booklet (within March 2018).
-Only after passing the preliminary language test will students be able to access the final exam. It will be possible to take the preliminary test or certificate at the University Language Centre. Once passed, the test is valid for one year.

- Scores in the preliminary test are expressed as percentages. A 70% score is necessary to pass the test. Scores in the preliminary test contribute to one third of the final mark. The final mark is assigned by the professor based on scores in the preliminary test (language assistant) and in the final exam (regular professor).
- Dictionaries are not allowed during the exams (preliminary and final exam).
- Students have to register to exams online at http://kiro.unipv.it
- Non-registered students will not be allowed to take the exam.

A B1 Language certificate allows students to skip the preliminary test .
A B2 Language certificate or plus allows students to pass the exam without sitting for it , students should provide the certificate to the Students' secretary .
