Prerequisites
Good knowledge of Latin and Roman History.
Learning outcomes
Reading, dating, recording a latin inscription and publishing criteria of text will be taught during the lessons.
A whole comprehension of every aspect shown by epigraphies (historical and palaeographical ones) will be achieved during the course, thanks to guided transcriptions and analysis of selected examples.
Course contents
Survival, transmission and reception of ancient epigraphies. Roman onomastic. Palaeographical features. Categories: holy, honorific, burial, related to public buildings, juridical ones and instrumentum inscriptum.
Epigraphical databases. Study of selected examples.
An autoptical survey of University of Pavia's epigraphical collection will take place at the end of the course.

2) One of the following handbooks:
- L. Braccesi, U. Agnati, Epigrafia latina, Bologna, Monduzzi, 2008
- A. Buonopane, Manuale di epigrafia latina, Roma, Carocci, 2011 (II ediz.): mandatory for not-attending students.
