Learning outcomes
An increasingly accelerated economic development is a major feature of the modern world and, above all, of the last half-century. Using different theoretical approaches and results of empirical research, lessons are designed to provide useful tools for studying development (concepts, definitions, explanatory models, indicators) and present some of the main problems of contemporary development related to the relationship between economy and society.
Course contents
The course is divided into three parts:
1. What is economic development and how it is measured
2. What determines economic development: the heritage of the classics and current responses
3. Problems of contemporary development in Italy and in the world
Teaching methods
The course includes both lectures and educational activities organized in the "discussion forums" with the participation of students.
Reccomended or required readings
Rostan, M., Economic development. What it is, how it is measured, on what it depends (available on the teacher's website, in Italian).
Other readings for discussion forums and for the examination will be given at the beginning of the lessons.
Assessment methods
Student assessment is based on the participation in the forums of discussion and on a written exam consisting of two parts: a) multiple choice (20) and very short answers (2) questions; b) a short essay answering one among three questions.
