Prerequisites
This is the second part of the course Contemporary History of Europe and could be applied by all those students who attended section A. Students from other courses can attend it too separately.
Learning outcomes
The course’s goal is to deepen specific topics and issues of xx century in a comparative approach to European history. Beside scientific literature, during lessons will be analyzed different documents from a wide range of sources and will be elaborated papers based on particular researches.
Course contents
University in the history of contemporary Europe: crisis, renewal, contradictions of a key –institution of Western civilization.
The University model born in the early thirteenth century in Western Europe has spread around the world in the last two centuries. This universalization is characterized by substantial metamorphosis in contemporary era. That evolution will be analyzed comparatively for different periods and focusing different cultural, social and political contexts in several European countries. Elitism and standardization, autonomy and subjection, scientific and cultural ethos and investment policies, myth of the universitas and markets are some of the useful hendiadys to better understand the circulations of cultural patterns and knowledge, the professions system, and finally, our intellectual heritage and the dynamics of our societies.
