Students will be expected to understand principles of lexical typology, as well as lexical and semantic change, with particular reference to the Indo-European languages.
Course contents
The structure of the simple and the complex sentence in the Indo-European languages and in PIE.
The course deals with the Indo-European language family, which will be described and discussed from various perspectives, depending on the students’ linguistic background. We will discuss the sub-branches of the Indo-Europena language family, as well as changes which led from ancient to modern languages, framed in a typological and areal framework. In particular, we sill discuss word order and word order change in the IE languages, in the framework of research on word order typology, as well as the origin and evolution of subordinate structures in various IE languages, also in relation with the discourse function of subordination, and the use of non-subordinating strategies and connectives.
