The course presupposes the knowledge of notions and categories of general linguistics, Italian linguistics and possibily also some basic notions of applied linguistics.

The course aims at giving the scientific bases for interpreting Italian L2 acquisition and for teaching Italian as a second and a foreign language. It will concentrate on the main language acquisition mechanisms, sequences and problems pertaining L2 Italian, and it will also deal with the most important features and conditions of language acquisition in the classroom, in the light of the most significant research results about these topics.

1. What does learning a second language mean? The concepts of interlanguage and learner variety
2. Mechanisms and factors of L2 acquisition, in the light of some of the main theoretical models
3. L2 acquisition phases and strategies
4. Italian as a second language. The 'Pavia project': sequences and acquisitional problems at different levels.
5. Learning a L2 in the classroom: features and conditions
6. Principles relevant for L2 teaching
7. Elements for a L2 teaching method based on L2 acquisition results

Lectures and analysis of L2 data.
