Prerequisites

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide first-year students with the basic methodological instruments for the study of language.
At the end of the course, students will be able to analyse (mostly Italian) sentences, providing a description of the morphosyntactic structure and of the main phonological, pragmatic and semantic properties. Furthermore, they will handle the basic notions useful for understanding the dimensions of variation of a language.
Students will acquire the basic knowledge for continuing their studies in the field of linguistics, language history and philology.
Course contents
The second part of the course of general linguistics present a more detailed study of some issues already discussed in the first part, in the light of different linguistic theories. After a short historical introduction, different contemporary approaches to linguistic theory (forma and functional) will be introduced, and the students will be familiarized with different treatments, both synchronic and diachronic, of the relation among linguistic levels (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics).
Teaching methods
Lectures, tutoring

During the whole academing year, beside lectures by the course instructor, students will be able to attend a tutoring service, where they will make exercises both to consolidate the notions learned during the course and to prepare for the final written exam.
