Prerequisites
Students must have a basic knowledge of European Contemporary History.
Learning outcomes
Teaching purpose is to compare the developments of main European local government systems between the nineteenth and twentieth century, identifying the persistence and constraints of such events on today's laws. The student must demonstrate that she/he has acquired the vocabulary and the conceptual tools to master and critically evaluate the topics.
Course contents
The course will examine historical features of the Italian Local Government, with comparative references to other bodies and local government European traditions. It will pay particular attention to the experiences of France, Germany and the UK and to issues such as territories, government bodies, functions, controls and center-periphery relations.
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars with the assignment and discussion of readings and primary sources.

Students must chose a book from the following ones:
E. Rotelli, Forme di governo delle democrazie nascenti. 1689-1799, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2005.

M. Meriggi, L’Europa dall’Otto al Novecento, Roma, Carocci, 2006.
Assessment methods
Each student will be required to produce an assessed essay in consultation with the teacher. The examination assessment will be oral for attending students and they will be allowed to prepare the exam on their course notes and on course readings; the non-attending students, instead, will have to study on the books listed above
