Prerequisites
Knowledge of ancient Greek language.
Learning outcomes
It provides the knowledge of the diachronic development and the formal features of ancient Greek literature. Its aims are reading, understanding, analysis and interpretation of original texts of ancient Greek literary civilization.
Course contents
“Trygodìa”. Aristophanes’ renewal of the poetics of comedy.

By reading passages of Aristophanean comedies, chosen mainly from parabaseis, the most significant features of Aristophanes’ reform of the comic genre will be analysed in depth, taking into due account the historical context of classical Athens at its best.

The examination will check the knowledge of:
1. topics and texts (in original) discussed during the lessons;
2. history of the ancient Greek literature from the origins to the Imperial age (see Bibliography);
3. an ancient Greek literary work, in original language, to be established with the teacher.

Reccomended or required readings
For the history of Greek literature from the beginnings to the imperial age (point 2 of the program), the recommended handbook, in Italian, is: F. MONTANARI-F. MONTANA, Storia della letteratura greca. Dalle origini all’età imperiale, Roma-Bari, Laterza, 2010.
For the choice of the text in Greek (point 3 of the program), as well as for further bibliography, specific instructions will be provided during the lectures or can be obtained by e-mail (fausto.montana@unipv.it).
