Prerequisites
A good knowledge of the history of Ancient Philosophy is required.
Students must have already passed a test on this subject.
Learning outcomes
Lectures aim at the presentation of a theoretical problem in the field of Ancient Thought, which will be analysed also from the historical and cultural points of view.
Course contents
Aristotle's "Rhetoric"

The following issues will be particularly analyzed:
-the historical and cultural context of the treatise;
-the relationship with Plato's theories on rhetoric ("Gorgias" and "Phaedrus");
- Aristotle's rhetoric as a technique and its conceptual tools (especially the enthymeme, the example, the topos);
-the three genres of discourse (deliberative, forensic and epideictic) and their relationships with the political institutions of the Greek city;
-the persuasion of the audience and the role of passions.
Teaching methods
After some introductory lessons, the course will be organized as a seminar. Students will be assigned some themes to be analyzed with a specific bibliography.
Students are therefore requested to attend classes.

Assessment methods
The verification will be through the evaluation of students' report.
Students who have not discussed a report will take an oral examination on the topics analyzed during the lectures.
