Learning outcomes
The goal of the course is to have the students acquainted with the basic notions on the institutional, politic, social and cultural history of the Ancient Near Eastern regions in the pre-classical period.
Course contents
1. (Introduction). The rediscovery of the ancient near eastern civilizations; the first archaeological excavations. Prehistory and early history; the 'Neolithic revolution' and the 'urban revolution'; the origin of the state; the first writing systems; the languages. Nomadic and sedentary people. Archives and libraries.
2. Sources and methods of the historical research; the chronological problem. The historical phases.
3. Aspects of society, religion, culture, science.
