Learning outcomes
Aim of the course is to give to the students the main tools for understanding the structures of solids
Course contents
The course is divided into two parts:
the first part deals with the thermodynamics and kinetics involved in phase transformations; The relations between defects and system properties are discussed: defects, conductivity, diffusivity and transport numbers in non- stoichiometric compounds (transition metal oxides, sulfides etc.); nucleation and growth of nuclei, kinetics of solid state transformations; Several models are used to describe the nucleation, growth and decomposition reactions of solids
The second part is a detailed description of the space groups by the International Tables for Crystallography; Special emphasis is given to the group - subgroup relations, symmorphicity, and the procedure for construction of a space group.
Teaching methods
The concepts discussed in the class, for both modules, are illustrated by laboratory experiments.
