Roman armed forces underwent numerous permutations in composition, organisation, equipment and tactics, therefore the leit-motiv will be the structural history, analyzing the unit types and ranks, legions, auxiliaries, generals, praetorian guards, special decorations, the lenght of service and the discharging of veterans as well.
