Basic knowledge of the outlines of Greek history and historiography
Knowledge of the various types of sources for Greek history

To learn specific methods in order to analyse the different sources of the historical research and the various kinds of historical discourses of the ancient greek writers
To give an advanced knowledge of Greek colonisation in the archaic period and of themes and issues of Military History (Ancient Greek Mercenaries)

Title: Travel and History in Ancient Greece (Herodotus, Xenophon's Anabasis, Pausanias)

Unit 1: Describing travel, describing landscape: epic and history
- Homer's Odyssey, Surviving Peripli and Periegesis

Unit 2: Travel and apoikoi between history and representation
- Literary traditions about apoikiai established in the eighth and seventh centuries BC: a 'stratigraphic' study
- Analysis and evaluations of the literary traditions about Greek travel and ktiseis

Unit 3: Travel and History: Herodotus and Pausanias between logoi and theoremata
- To analyze loci focusing on Greek and non-Greek ethne and poleis in order to investigate geopolitical knowledge of Herodotus and Pausanias
- To examine the role of the travellers in making history
- To learn specific methods in order to analyse the different sources of the historical research and the various kinds of historical discourses of the ancient greek writers

Unit 4: Xenophon's Anabasis between travel and history
- Content and structure
- Historiographic methods and forms of research and composition
- Narrative choices Xenophon: author and protagonist of the Anabasis
- The Ten Thousand: Mercenaries and Paid Men
