Learning outcomes
The course explores how codification has developed in the modern and contemporary era (history of its sources, its culture and of its legal consequences) across Europe, focusing, in particular, on Italy. Particular attention is given to the evolution of Private Law and its codification from the eighteenth century to the twentieth century
Course contents
The course is devoted to the history of codification in Italy from unification to the present codes, focusing, in particular, on the social and historical context underlying the codification of civil law.

La codificazione del diritto nel Risorgimento, latest edition, Roma-Bari, Laterza, pages 147-313 (students are recommended to read: pages 1-146, which cover subjects discussed during the course of History of Italian Law); C. Ghisalberti, La codificazione del diritto in Italia (1865-1942), latest edition, Roma-Bari, Laterza, pages 3-292. The study of the books does not include footnotes. Those students who attend lectures and take part in seminars, will be examined on the basis of a study programme agreed with the Lecturer, and also taking into account research and reports presented at the end of the course.
