Prerequisites
Familiarity with the main concepts and issues in analytical contemporary political philosophy is an advantage, although not a requirement.
Learning outcomes
The course aims to introduce students to the philosophical analysis of the justification of public policies for the reconciliation of minority issues in a democracy. To enhance students’ critical skills, philosophical analysis will be carried out alongside the discussion of some case studies.
Course contents
The course addresses such issues as: does the concession of forms of differential treatment to minorities conflict with the liberal commitment to the equality of all citizens? Does the granting of legal exemptions on religious or cultural grounds risk undermining the stability of the rule of law? On what bases should exemptions be granted to what agents (individuals vs. groups)?
