Learning outcomes
The course aims to tackle key notions in the field of English second language acquisition (SLA), including spontaneous and classroom SLA, interlanguage and acquisition stages, learner varieties, and English lingua franca. It examines the main results in SLA research and applications regarding the teaching of English as a second/foreign language.
Course contents
Language input in the incidental learning of English as a second language
The course offers an overview of key notions in the field of English as a second language, including spontaneous and classroom second language acquisition (SLA), interlanguage and stages of acquisition, learner varieties and English lingua franca. It focuses on input, that is, the language data learners obtain through exposure to English in its different forms such as native speakers’ monologues, native/non-native interactions, simplified speech. Topics covered include the main input types in naturalistic, classroom and multimedial contexts, with special emphasis on incidental (versus intentional) learning in CLIL - content and language integrated learning - contexts and during exposure to audiovisual input - i.e., English spoken in films and TV fictions with or without interlingual subtitles.
