Learning outcomes
provide the necessary knowledge of the East Roman world (4th-15th centuries) in order to give students the initial instruments to pursue more advanced studies in the field.
Course contents
An introduction to Byzantine civilization. Time and space: periods and geographical extension of the East Roman world. The State and its structures. The cornerstones of Byzantium: Hellenism, the Roman heritage, Christianity. Specific themes: agrarian history; the State and Church in Byzantium; the army and a millennium of wars.
