Learning outcomes
Lectures aim to provide an initial introduction to geographical knowledge during the classical age through the analysis of an anthology of Latin and Greek sources, such as Pausania''s Periegesis.
Course contents
The conception of geography as shown by Greek historical sources. Peripli, Strabo''s Geographica (inventory of people and places in the world), Pausania''s Periegesis, Geography and Politics. Natural and administrative boundaries: known issues.
Teaching methods
Lectures, with active students'' partecipation too.
Reccomended or required readings
1) Historical sources examined during lessons.
2) S. Bianchetti, Geografia storica del mondo antico, Bologna, Monduzzi, 2008: mandatory.
For not attending students, studying F. Cordano, La geografia degli antichi, Bari, Laterza, 2002 (III ediz.) id mandatory too.
