Understanding latin inscriptions











Good knowledge of Latin and Roman History
Learning outcomes
Reading, dating, recording a Latin inscription and the publishing criteria of texts will be taught during the lessons.
A thorough comprehension of all aspects of epigraphies (historical and palaeographical ones) will be achieved during the course, thanks to guided transcriptions and the analysis of selected examples.
Course contents
Survival, transmission and reception of ancient epigraphies and palaeographical features. Categories: holy, honorific, burial, epigraphs on public buildings, of a juridical nature, and instrumentum inscriptum. Epigraphical databases. Study of selected examples.
An autoptical survey of the University of Pavia’s epigraphical collection will take place at the end of the course.
