Good knowledge of Latin and Roman History
Learning outcomes
Starting from pre-acquired knowledge of Latin and Roman history, a full comprehension of daily life in the Roman age (work, spare time, leisure activities, family and social patterns, eating and dietary behaviors, etc.) will be achieved through a deep analysis of historical sources.
Course contents
Working areas: agriculture, handicraft, commerce. Leisure time: shows and games ( gladiatorial shows, theatrical performances and horse races), baths and bathing (leisure, hygiene) and cosmetics.
Social patterns and their reflection in political contests. Eating behaviors.
Family: marriage, child education, patria potestas.
Teaching methods
Lectures, with students’ active contribution too, seminars.
Reccomended or required readings
1- Anthology of literary and epigraphical texts will be analyzed during the lessons
2- A deep study of two of the following handbooks:

Students carrying on a personal research on an arrenged topic are required to read only one book, within the ones quoted at point 2. For students not attending lessons is mandatory studying 3 books.
