Learning outcomes
The aim of this course is to critically examine the linkages between poverty, inequality and growth, the most relevant measurement issues related to inequality and poverty analysis and their implication in terms of economic and human development policies. The course is divided into two teaching modules (inequality analysis and poverty analysis) and integrated by workshops providing the skills required for carrying out empirical analysis using Stata.
Course contents
The main topics discussed in this course are: normative and positive theory of income distribution
- Positive income inequality measures and complete rankings
- Normative income inequality measures and partial orderings: Lorenz curve and axiomatic structure of normative indexes
- Theories and measures of income poverty
- Multidimensional poverty analysis: theory and measures
- Growth, poverty and inequality linkages in a globalizing world
- Inequalities and poverty in developed and developing countries: empirical evidence
