Prerequisites
No previous philosophical knowledge is required. However, a basic knowledge of the social sciences would make understanding quicker
Learning outcomes
Social sciences (sociology, anthropology, economics and political science) resort to causal, functional and intentional explanations. By means of empirical examples and analytical concepts, the course aims to provide an understanding of the bases of these three patterns of explanation.
Course contents
The course considers basic notions of epistemology and philosophy in the natural and social sciences; 2. Causal, functional and intentional explanations in the social sciences: theoretical bases, empirical evidence, philosophical and methodological debate; 3. Seminars about intentional explanation; the topic is rational choice theory and methodological individualism
Teaching methods
Lectures (30 hours), Seminars involving discussion of texts (10 hours)
