Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to introduce students to the ongoing debates on gender issues, with a particular focus on gender economics. It discusses the state of the art of the international debate on women, gender and development, highlighting some specific topics such as gender discrimination in labor and credit market, economic behavior, intra-household inequality, gender disparities in resources and opportunities’ distribution, women’s empowerment.
Course contents

The main topics addressed are:
Gender Indicators
Gender in the labor market
Women-led enterprises and gender bias in the credit markets
Globalization and gender
Women, gender and development
Do women and men behave differently? What the economic theory says
Bargaining power and intrahousehold inequality. What the economic theory says
Gender poverty and inequalities: resources, opportunities, outcomes. What empirical evidence shows
Women’s agency and empowerment
Teaching methods

The course will be taught over 2 Teaching Blocks: one taught by Prof. Rabellotti and the second one by Prof. Chiappero. There will be lectures and seminars in both blocks. The students will be involved in group work and presentations, which will take place during the class hours. They will be assessed and contribute 40% towards the final mark.

Assessment methods

Written exam and group work for attending students.
Written exam for those who will not regularly attending the class
