Learning outcomes
The course aims at offering knowledge in the field of psychology of aging from both theoretical and practical points of view. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
-explain the main theories and fundamentals of the psychology of aging;
- make a distinction between normal and pathological aging;
- describe age-related changes in cognitive and socio-cognitive abilities;
- know and apply research methods in studying the psychology of aging;
- be familiar with the main psychological and neuropsychological tests to assess cognitive and socio-cognitive abilities in older adults;
- know methods and interventions to promote active and healthy aging.
Course contents
This course is designed to provide a broad overview of the major theories and empirical data in the domain of psychology of aging with an emphasis on critical evaluation of new research findings. The underlying theme throughout the course will be the interaction among aging and cognitive, emotional, and social functioning changes in older adults. Students will gain more insight into the recent advances in the aging process from a theoretical and practical point of view, especially concerning age-related changes in decision-making ability, prosociality, and social relationship abilities. Furthermore, during the course intervention programs to improve both cognitive and socio-cognitive abilities will be presented.
