Prerequisites
None, but candidates with a CEFR level of B1 or lower will have trouble following classes and will need more time to prepare for the exam.
Learning outcomes
1) Improve comprehension of scientific manuscripts in particular by being familiar with complex noun group structure and usage. Correct pronounciation of words relevant to lesson topics.
2) Improve impact and clarity of oral presentations by optimizing use and pronounciation of nouns, and by making optimal use of PowerPoint.
Passing this exam does NOT entitle students to an official language certificate, which can only be obtained through one of the accredited exam boards: Cambridge, IELTS, TOEFL, etc.
Course contents
1) The course focuses on aspects of the English noun phrase that make comprehension and production difficult for Italian mother tongue speakers, e.g. word order and the use of nouns as “adjectives” to premodify other nouns. Correct pronounciation of words will also be covered.
2) Students will learn PowerPoint presentation techniques and apply them in their final oral exam. The aims are to practice the use of nouns, correct pronounciation and to use PowerPoint as an instrument to improve impact and comprehensibility in spoken presentations.
Teaching methods
Lecture time alternating with individual and interactive group practice and discussions to be carried out in English. The lecturer is available for individual support if necessary to produce presentations.
